As the November chill was setting into Berlin in late November, Refraction partnered with Ma Halla to present Monster Mutations. Taking over a 9000 square meter former turbine hall, Monster Mutations provided an alternate space to explore the outer reaches of the consciousness cosmos. The event took over the industrial building from 1897, refashioning its cold austere history into the frontier for technological soul searching.
Held in two distinct listening rooms, the musical billing included everyone from the legendary Raster-Noton founder, Frank Bretschneider, to upstart Moderna, a DJ and producer whose label, Brave New Rave, focuses on the intersection of music and blockchain technologies; from the experimental jazz trio, Gropper, Henkelhausen, Lichtenberger to the atmospheric musings of Maya Wada. As with all things Refraction, this was an opportunity to both imagine the future, while staying grounded in an acute sense of history.
Refraction and The Department of Decentralization are presenting the art programming at this year’s ETHBerlin from May 24-26. The exhibition is curated through an Open Call. Interested artists can submit their artwork from April 10th to May 10th.
