In ISLANDS, Sassoon employs minimal pixelated graphics and moiré patterning to generate archetypical landscapes composed of black silhouettes over a polychromatic background. For each animation, Yu Su has created melodic and textured sonic compositions, bringing an emotional dimension to the works.

About the Artists

Nicolas Sassoon

Nicolas Sassoon’s practice has long been concerned with the tensions between pixel and screen, reflecting on their entanglement and materiality by integrating pixelated figures, moiré patterns, and early computer graphics into experiential displays. This focus on early computer graphics is driven by the sculptural, material, and pictorial qualities of this imagery and its limitations and poetics. Nicolas’s research has led him to engage in many cross-disciplinary projects across architecture, electronic music, textiles, and art over the last decade. Nicolas has been involved with online communities (particularly Computers Club) since 2008, he minted his first NFT in February 2021 and started collecting NFTs from other artists shortly after. The Web3 space has become an increasingly exciting chapter in Nicolas’ career. “There is a significant cultural shift happening in web3 in terms of how artists can collect and support other artists,” he says. “This shift brings incredible new forms of agency, autonomy and income to many artists, but this emerging culture needs to be nurtured and pushed forward to establish itself as a sustainable and long-term alternative.”

Yu Su

Balancing dub, ambient, krautrock, jazz and dance music, the Kaifeng-born, Vancouver-based Yu Su has become one of the city's most distinctive electronic musicians. Over releases for labels like People's Potential Unlimited, Music From Memory's, Ninja Tune's Technicolour, and most recently her own imprint Bie Records, she's outlined a deeply personal sound that mixes influences from her childhood piano training, Chinese opera and the dance music she discovered in Canada. With her solo work and other side projects,  Yu Su is becoming one of the most prominent modern disciples of Fourth World, exploring and creating new musical realms with each new release.
