Refraction Japan: A Discussion with Co-Curators of Our Upcoming Tokyo Events

Tokyo's cultural scene is often described as "chaotic," with a wildly diverse range of formats and genres, from contemporary art to club culture, games, anime, and more. Refraction’s two events in Tokyo—Refraction Tokyo × MUTEK.JP, which will be held in conjunction with MUTEK.JP for its seventh edition in the Shibuya district, and Refraction Tokyo Gallery Exhibition—explore this pandemonium through music, performance, and digital art with cutting-edge creatives.

コンテンポラリーアートからクラブカルチャー、ゲーム、アニメなどさまざまなジャンルが並立し、しばしば「カオティック」とも評される東京のカルチャーシーン。Refractionが東京で開催する「Refraction Tokyo ×MUTEK.JP」（今年7回目を迎えるMUTEK.JPと共同で開催）と「Refraction Tokyo Gallery Exhibition」は、そんな東京の混沌としたカルチャーシーンを、最先端のクリエイティブたちとともに音楽やデジタルアート、パフォーマンスを通して探るイベントだ。

“I tried to make it as diverse as possible, to show the chaos of the city,” says Manami Sakamoto, who co-curated the event with Genki Nishida and Jackson Kaki. We talked with the trio about what to expect from the events, and the unique nature of the Japanese cultural scene.

「できるだけ多様性をもたせ、東京のカオティックなところを表現するようにしました」。そう話すのは、今回2つのイベントをGenki Nishida、JACKSON kakiと共にキュレーションしたManami Sakamotoだ。このふたつのイベントがどのようなものになるのか、そして日本のカルチャーシーンの独自性について、3人のキュレーターたちに訊いた。

You are curating two events, Refraction Tokyo x MUTEK.JP and Refraction Tokyo Gallery Exhibition. Could you describe each of the events and what they are about?

今回みなさんは「Refraction Tokyo x MUTEK.JP」と「Refraction Tokyo Gallery Exhibition」という2つのイベントのキュレーションをされていますが、それぞれどのようなものになるのか教えてください。

Genki Nishida: Refraction Tokyo x MUTEK.JP is a music night that will also serve as an afterparty for MUTEK.JP, which will be held from December 7th in Shibuya. For the last several years, MUTEK.JP has provided innovative audiovisual experiences combining music, visuals, and stage production. We tried to extract the sense and taste of the event and express that with a Refraction twist. While Refraction Tokyo x MUTEK.JP is a music event, the Refraction Tokyo Gallery Exhibition showcases both Japanese and international cutting-edge artists. DJs will be performing at this event too, but their performances will be different from club sets—it will be more of a sound that cultivates the atmosphere of the venue. We hope that it will become a place where visitors can also enjoy gathering and socializing. 

Genki Nishida：「Refraction Tokyo x MUTEK.JP」は、12月7日から渋谷で開催されるMUTEK.JPのアフターパーティーを兼ねたミュージックナイトです。MUTEK.JPはこれまで音楽、映像、演出を組み合わせ革新的なオーディオビジュアル体験を提供してきました。今回のイベントでは、そんなMUTEK.JPのセンスやテイストをくみとり、Refractionとして表現しようとしています。この「Refraction Tokyo x MUTEK.JP」は音楽イベントになりますが、「The Refraction Tokyo Gallery Exhibition」のほうでは国内外にいる最先端のビジュアルアーティストたちを招いています。DJたちも出演しますが、クラブミュージックよりも会場の雰囲気を醸成するようなパフォーマンスになる予定です。来場者が集い、交流する場にもなればと思っています。

You have artists practicing various genres and modes of expression. Did you have any specific theme in mind for the curation?

さまざまなジャンルや表現方法を実践するアーティストが揃っていますよね。キュレーションにあたって、何か具体的なテーマはあったのでしょうか？

Manami Sakamoto: I am a VJ and Visual Designer, and it was actually my first time curating an event like this. When I was contacted by Refraction, they asked me to showcase what was at the forefront of the visual scene in Tokyo. As an answer to that, I tried to make it as diverse as possible, and show the chaos of the city. For example, we have Saeko Ehara, a Kirakira (sparkling) artist and VJ who is actively creating her artwork on NFTs, and Kaoru Tanaka, who only uses TouchDesigner to create her artwork. My collaborative work with machìna, who is from South Korea but has been based in Japan for seven years, will be at the exhibition as well.

Manami Sakamoto：実は私は普段VJやビジュアルデザイナーとして活動していて、今回のようなイベントのキュレーションは初めてだったんです。キュレーションにあたり、Refractionからは「東京のビジュアルシーンの最前線を知りたい」と言われていました。そのリクエストへの答えとして、今回のイベントにはできるだけ多様性をもたせ、東京のカオティックなところを表現するようにしました。例えば、NFTで積極的に作品制作をしているキラキラアーティストでVJのSaeko Eharaさんや、TouchDesignerだけで作品制作をしているKaoru Tanakaさんなどがその例です。私も韓国出身で日本を拠点に7年活動している電子音楽家のmachìnaと一緒に作った作品を展示します。

Tokyo is a city whose cultural scene is often described as "chaotic." What do you suppose makes people feel that way?

東京のカルチャーシーンは「カオティック」と表現されることも多いと感じますが、その理由はどのようなところにあると思われますか？

Manami Sakamoto: Tokyo is a city crowded with many different cultures, such as games, anime, VTuber, idols, dance music, etc, in a good way. These cultures also seem to be divided by generation. It's not always that they want to stay away from each other, so they sometimes stick together or are scrambled. I find that disorganization unique and interesting. There are many options for enjoying the nightlife in Tokyo, such as karaoke and izakaya bars, which may be another reason for the disorganized nature of the culture.

Manami Sakamoto：東京は、ゲームやアニメからVTuber、アイドル、ダンスミュージックなど、良い意味で様々な文化が乱立している都市なんですよね。しかも、そうしたカルチャ―は世代によって分離している印象をもっています。必ずしも離れたくて離れているわけではなく、たまにくっついたりスクランブルされたりする。その乱立具合が独特で面白いんです。東京にはカラオケや居酒屋など、ナイトライフを楽しむための選択肢がたくさんあることも、そんな乱立の理由になっているのかもしれません。

出演者のリストには、海外アーティストも何人かリストアップされていますよね。

Jackson Kaki: We curated 3DCG artists and graphic artists who are not so well known in Japan, but are renowned in the US and other countries. I believe that these artists would be a good inspiration for Japanese artists who use NFTs. I have participated in Refraction's events in another city as an artist, and I found the way Refraction’s artists use NFTs interesting. People who create artwork in the digital realm experience a harder time monetizing their artwork than those who are in the fine art field, for example. Inevitably, the way to monetize their creativity was often limited to commissioned works such as advertisements. But with NFTs, you can enjoy the artist's work purely as their own creation.

Jackson Kaki: 日本ではあまり認知されていないけれど、アメリカなどでは活躍している3DCGアーティストやグラフィックアーティストなどをキュレーションしました。NFTを使う日本のアーティストに良いインスピレーションを与えてくれるようなアーティストたちだと思います。僕自身、別の都市で行われたRefractionのイベントにアーティストとして参加したことがあるのですが、その際RefractionのアーティストたちのNFTの使い方に面白さを感じました。デジタル領域で作品を作るアーティストは、例えばファインアートの分野で活躍しているアーティストよりも作品をマネタイズしにくい傾向にありますよね。そのため、クリエイティビティをマネタイズする方法が必然的に広告などの委託制作に限られがちでした。しかし、NFTではアーティストたちの純粋な創作物としての作品を楽しめるんですよね。

Genki Nishida: We are looking forward to seeing what kind of chemical reactions will happen through the collaboration between international and Japanese artists. There will also be an online exhibition that features Akiko Nakayama's Alive Painting and a film by Koolik + Lost Souls of Saturn (a duo project by Seth Troxler and Phil Moffa). We hope those who cannot attend the on-site exhibition can also enjoy the event.

西田元気：海外のアーティストと日本のアーティストコラボレーションで、どんな化学反応が起きるかを楽しみに見てみたいと思っています。また、今回はオンラインエキシビションでAkiko NakayamaのAlive Paintingと Koolik＋Lost Souls of Saturn (Seth Troxler、Phil Moffaによるデュオプロジェクト) の映像作品『Frequency Transmission』も公開されます。参加できない方も、そちらでイベントを楽しんでもらえればと思います。

Refraction Tokyo x MUTEK.JP will be held on December 11th at Mitsuki, and Refraction Tokyo Gallery Exhibition opens at the Galaxy gallery on December 13th and 14th.
